MOVEMENT FOR MACEY

Unknown and unknowable. It’s what CrossFit is supposed to help us prepare for. But, what if the unknown or unknowable is a doctor telling you your child has a disease with no cure and a life expectancy of 37 years, at best? How do you prepare for something like that?

You don’t. Not even CrossFit can help you prepare for something like that.

But the beauty of CrossFit is that it still CAN help in times like this. CrossFit is more than constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity…CrossFit is about community. A community that cares, loves, that gives back and pays it forward…a community that essentially becomes a family.

The Doenges are our family. Not by blood, but by choice. The Doenges are kind beyond any words I can write. They are the type of people you want in your life. The type of people that truly enhance your life. The type of people that you meet and you feel instantly loved and welcome in their lives. I am not religious…but we are truly blessed to know such an amazing family.

So, last week, when we received the news about Macey, we were devastated. Macey is a very active, 10 year old, 4th grade girl with a strong spirit. And, she was just diagnosed with Cystic Fibrosis. This is a life threatening genetic disease that affects the lungs and digestive system. Currently there is NO cure for Cystic Fibrosis.

Macey’s wish is that no other child becomes sick with CF. In order to make her wish come true, she is trying to raise at least $20,000 to help find a cure in the GREAT STRIDES fundraiser for CF. GREAT STRIDES is the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation’s largest and most successful national fundraising event. Macey will be walking in the GREAT STRIDES walk at the 2010 Naperville – Riverwalk Grand Pavilion walk on 05/22/2010.

We heard this and we knew we had to do whatever we could to help Macey reach her goal.

We are in the process of working to set up an event, similar to Fight Gone Bad…Movement for Macey. On Saturday, April 3rd we will host a WOD dedicated to this little hero, and the part that we are the most excited about is that CrossFit Naperville (where Macey lives) is going to be partnering up with us as well. We’re hoping she’ll be able to make it out to CF Naperville to attend the WOD :) . Our goal is to help Macey reach, and hopefully far exceed her goal of $20K. We know that times are tough for everybody right now, but we hope that you can open up your hearts and pocket books to help out this little girl.

We will be setting up a PayPal donation page and will be providing you more information about the event soon…so stay tuned for details!

Cystic fibrosis (CF) is a devastating genetic disease that affects tens of thousands of children and young adults in the United States. Research and care supported by the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation is making a huge difference in extending the quality of life for those with CF. However, we continue to lose precious lives to CF every day. That’s why your help is needed now more than ever to ensure that a cure is found sooner – rather than later. FILFEST 2010 RECAP

I was on the outside looking in. A WOD was going on, there were people moving, sweating, swearing, laughing…it was like watching TV on mute. And, in that split second, I felt such an unbelievable pride. Proud of what Ray and I have built, proud of the people putting their all into the workout. I also felt incredibly humbled.

Ray and I attended Filfest 2010 this weekend. Filfest is a gathering of CrossFit Affiliates from around the world, a chance to get together, listen, learn and make connections. Of course, one of the main speakers was Coach Glassman.

As Coach was speaking, he stated that he was there for us, the Affiliate owners. That our success determined his, and CrossFit’s success. That without us, CrossFit was nothing. And, I realized a few things…

First, that Coach probably felt how I did in that moment, when I was on the outside looking in. Being in awe of what we have built, being so proud and humbled by it all. Feeling so very fortunate. There are times that it is overwhelming, there are times when what we do isn’t very fun. But, at the end of the day, we are helping to change lives and make things better…and it makes it all worth it.

And the other thing I realized is that what Coach said to us, the Affiliate owners is also true for YOU. Our success, CrossFit Peachtree’s success, depends on YOU and your successes. Without you guys, there would be no CFPT, no community, no CrossFit movement at all. You should feel very excited to be a part of the CrossFit movement…it’s exploding, it’s changing lives and changing the way that people think about nutrition and fitness and health. We are all in the very beginning of a movement that is really making a difference in the world and each one of you is responsible for that. By telling your friends, family and co-workers about this crazy thing you do called CrossFit, you are helping to change people’s lives.

In the coming months, there are going to be a few more changes around the gym. We are excited about the ideas we have come up with, with the programs that we hope to launch by the fall, and just a few things to make CFPT even better than it already is :) !

So, thank YOU. Ray and I want you to know we are here for you, to help you be successful. Whether it’s that next PR, losing body fat, or if you just need an ear…that’s what we are here for.

Be sure to check out the recipe blog, a few new ones have been posted: http://crossfitpeachtreenutrition.com/

  2. Palgon on February 22nd, 2010 9:45 am

Taylor, that was a fun WOD on Saturday. I’m still feeling it in my legs. I could use more workouts like that one.

  3. b on February 22nd, 2010 9:45 am

Here is a video so you can get to know Macey a bit better: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7rZiW_6lP3Q

  4. Jimbo "The Impact" Tomanchek on February 22nd, 2010 9:47 am

  5. Jill on February 22nd, 2010 10:09 am

I see RED in that picture! :D

  6. b on February 22nd, 2010 10:14 am

@Jimbo – no idea…if you can bring it into Stone Mountain, then you can bring it to the Games, I am guessing.

@Jill – I cropped that pic like that just for you :P

  7. SaraH Mayor of Shortville on February 22nd, 2010 10:17 am

HAHA I was about to email Jill and tell her to look at the WOD page.

  8. SaraH Mayor of Shortville on February 22nd, 2010 10:18 am

    Congrats Veronica and Sung!

  9. Mike D, and I'm going platinum on February 22nd, 2010 10:29 am

Jimbo, I am sure you can bring coolers, don’t think they will let you bring it into the venue. However, the should crank up the laser show about Mid May if you want to stick around and yell out “hell yeah” when they play Willie Nelson…

  10. Jill on February 22nd, 2010 10:30 am

    Thanks B! :)

  11. SaraH Mayor of Shortville on February 22nd, 2010 10:51 am

That slideshow about Macey was very touching and inspirational…once again crying on my way to work.

So happy that we can help! Is there going to be a website set up specifically where people can donate money to her fundraiser? So we can send it out to family and friends?

  12. b on February 22nd, 2010 11:03 am

Yes – I’ll be setting up a PayPal account soon and we’ll be releasing details of the WOD, etc with that so you can all hit up your friends and family :) .

    Thanks for everybody’s support!

  15. Jimbo "The Impact" Tomanchek on February 22nd, 2010 11:33 am

Katy, that is awesome!!!! Who all is going as a spectator?

  16. Jill on February 22nd, 2010 11:37 am

    I’ll be there Jimbo.

  17. Mike D, and I'm going platinum on February 22nd, 2010 11:39 am

I just read through this WOD..75 handstand push ups..who is teaching the 6:30 to 10:45 class tonight??

  18. Meghan on February 22nd, 2010 11:41 am

    WOOO HHOOOOO JAMES!!!

  21. Jasmine on February 22nd, 2010 12:01 pm

My friend has a free ticket so I’m going =)

  22. Daniel AKA NOT AK Dan on February 22nd, 2010 12:06 pm

Yeah seriously 75 hspu? I think I did 10 on saturday before I tweaked my neck.

  23. SaraH Mayor of Shortville on February 22nd, 2010 12:07 pm

Just watched the video on form for Sectionals. I know a lot of people were curious if you have to show your fingers at the bottom of the deads…you do NOT. It looks like the biggest thing they are looking for is finishing the deadlift with your shoulders behind the bar.

  24. b on February 22nd, 2010 12:07 pm

Just ’cause 25 is posted, doesn’t mean you guys can’t scale it down. This is a hero WOD, it’s supposed to be hard.

  25. Daniel AKA NOT AK Dan on February 22nd, 2010 12:15 pm

    And scale I shall! 8)

  26. Jenny T on February 22nd, 2010 12:16 pm

Mike, I’m working at 6:30 tonight provided I don’t die first! Ha ha! I’m sure we can come up with a few ways to scale the WOD. I think the most important thing is to make sure you can keep the intensity up, so we’l l scale it to make sure everyone can keep moving throughout. Again, all of this is subject to my surviving the 5:30 class.

Jill – that was nice of you to let Mike G out for the weekend to impart wisdom on others.

  27. Mike D, and I'm going platinum on February 22nd, 2010 12:27 pm

Jenny, I have no idea how being upside down will impact the spray zone; you may want to stand by the front door and yell instructions to me back in the sweat sock..Or you can just burp once for open your hips on the squats, twice for lock out your arms on the HSPU’s…

  28. Sung on February 22nd, 2010 12:30 pm

I’m gonna need a demo on that ring hspu!

  29. b on February 22nd, 2010 12:32 pm
  30. b on February 22nd, 2010 12:43 pm

Spectators…I think there are some changes to the passes:

    1. one-day pass at gate for $25

    OR

    2. If you buy a weekend pass for $50 you get a 2nd one free, so you can split this with somebody for $25 and get in both days!

  31. Sung on February 22nd, 2010 1:06 pm

b, I meant form someone at the gym. :D

  32. b on February 22nd, 2010 1:27 pm

Haha…Sung, I think you’d be the perfect demo person :)

  33. b on February 22nd, 2010 1:29 pm

It’s been a while, so thought I’d post a lunch update:

1 cup organic mixed baby green
    1/4 cucumber, sliced
    1/2 tomato, sliced
    1/2 avocado, chopped
2 Lou’s Famous Sun Dried Tomato Chicken Sausage (gluten free)

Toss the salad ( 8O ) with a dash of the dressing from yesterday’s cilantro salad: http://crossfitpeachtreenutrition.com/cilantro-salad/

  34. Lis on February 22nd, 2010 1:32 pm

I just want to thank Taylor, Sung, and the other lovely gentleman who demo’d the sectionals WOD for us late on Beer Friday. Mmmm, Beer Friday.

Jenny, Jill, CF Barbie- you left too soon.

Yes, today’s WOD was highly enjoyable. All 27 minutes of it. FML.

  35. Lis on February 22nd, 2010 1:33 pm

B- where do you buy that chicken sausage?

  36. b on February 22nd, 2010 1:34 pm

I just want to thank Taylor, Sung, and the other lovely gentleman who demo’d the sectionals WOD for us late on Beer Friday.

Lis, your thirst for knowledge was matched only by your thirst for Guinness. You were riveted on every move…such dedication.

  39. jill on February 22nd, 2010 2:22 pm

Jenn! I will. I have already bought a ticket but we can figure something out!

Tossed salad. Thanks for that post lunch laughter B!

  41. Jenny T on February 22nd, 2010 2:30 pm

Lis – now that the weather is starting to not suck, I’m pretty sure that I’ve got the support of the ladies….errrr…skanks at the gym to reinstate the “third round shirtless” rule. It was quite effective last year. This rule is only applicable to guys and the rare specimen of female who resembles my beloved Mariah.

Oh and now is as good a time as any to remind all you folks going out this weekend who have never seen a competitive CF event that Mariah is spoken for so lay off!

  42. Mike D, and I'm going platinum on February 22nd, 2010 2:47 pm

Jenn! I will. I have already bought a ticket but we can figure something out!

Yes, Jill, I am sure you are willing to share your ticket…You will smack anyone that gets close to you on Saturday, you aren’t sharing that ticket…

  43. Lindsey on February 22nd, 2010 2:49 pm

Lis… Damn the man, I should have stayed Friday. I am sure our troops, or one troop, would not have minded my tardiness as it would not have been in vein. Any demonstration of a beautiful male physique, hard at work is always worth extra minutes of my time. booo

Jill, so that is object of your stalking. get it chick.
